The children's garden

Our garden is not a decoration. Children plan it, plant it, water it, weed it, harvest it, and eat from it.

Raised beds of corn, beans, and zinnias at the Arroyo Grande community garden where Heidi's House Childcare children workSunflowers, succulents, and flowering plots across the community garden the preschool tends each week

A year-round growing calendar

Mild coastal weather means something is always ready: peas and greens in the cool months, tomatoes, beans, and sunflowers in the warm ones.

From bed to snack table

Children wash, slice, and serve what they pick. Food preparation is our most popular practical life work, and picky eating quietly fades when a child grew the carrot.

Compost, worms, and soil

Snack scraps go to the worm bin, worm castings go back to the beds, and children see the loop close within a single season.
