How to choose a preschool in Arroyo Grande: a parent's checklist

Tours blur together fast. These are the questions and small details that actually tell you what a school is like on a normal Tuesday.

Watch the children, not the room

Beautiful shelves are easy to buy. What you cannot fake is how the children behave when nobody is performing for the tour. Are they absorbed or drifting? Do they go to the adults easily? Does someone who is upset get met, or managed?

Give yourself five silent minutes on any tour and just watch one child you don't know.

Questions worth asking out loud

Most schools will answer these gladly, and the ones that get defensive have told you something.

  • What does a hard day look like here — how do you handle biting, hitting, or a long tantrum?
  • How much of the day is outside, and what happens when it rains?
  • Who is with my child, and how long have they been here?
  • How will I hear about my child's day?
  • What is your total monthly cost, including supplies, late pickup, and holidays?

Ratios and continuity

Small group size matters less than who is in it and whether they stay. High staff turnover is the single biggest quality signal in early childhood care. Ask directly how long each adult has been at the school.

At Heidi's House Childcare, the owner-operator is with the children daily — the person you meet on the tour is the person who will know your child.

Fit beats philosophy

Montessori, Reggio Emilia, Waldorf, play-based, academic — labels help you shortlist, but they don't predict whether your particular child will thrive. A shy child in a loud room and a big mover in a quiet room will both struggle regardless of the sign on the door.

Bring your child to the second visit and watch what their body does in the first ten minutes.
